Flynn and McCoy are Lastest Quarterbacks to be Traded

With the weakest draft class of quarterbacks in recent memory, many NFL teams are resorting to trading for options to compete with who they currently have. The Kansas City Chiefs were the first team to make a move. They acquired veteran Alex Smith from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2013 second-round draft pick and a 2014 conditional second-round draft pick. Today, two more quarterbacks were on their way to new homes due to accepted trades.

The Oakland Raiders acquired quarterback Matt Flynn from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2014 draft and a conditional pick in 2015. Flynn has waited for a long time to be given the reigns of a team as a starting quarterback. He spent for years backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. The Seahawks signed Flynn prior to last season, but he got beat out by rookie sensation Russell Wilson.

The Raiders knew they needed to bring a new quarterback in once they found that veteran Carson Palmer wasn't the answer. He failed to get Oakland to the playoffs in 2011, falling one game short. Last season, the Raiders regressed and finished 4-12. With Palmer owed $13 million for this season and the Raiders in rebuilding mode, general manager Reggie McKenzie decided to get a quarterback he was familiar with from his time in Green Bay.

Flynn did shine in his limited playing experience with the Packers. For example, he was 31-for-44 for 480 yards and six touchdown passes in the Packers' 2010 season finale win over the Detroit Lions. The Raiders do also have Terrelle Pryor who got limited action late last season after Palmer got injured.

In last season's regular season finale, Pryor went 13-for-28 for 150 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 24-21 loss to the Chargers. He also ran for 49 yards and a touchdown. Pryor showed signs of being capable of effectively running a NFL offense. It appears to be a fairly open race to see whether Flynn or Pryor will emerge during this offseason as the Raiders' starting quarterback.

The Seahawks are of course set with Wilson as their starter. They also have Tyler Thigpen on their roster, who is expected to be Wilson's primary backup. Thigpen has substantial NFL experience, including playing in 14 games with the Chiefs in 2008. The Seahawks will need to add one more quarterback to their roster. Matt Leinart is a possibility to rejoin his collegiate coach Pete Carroll, who is now the head coach of the Seahawks.

The Cleveland Browns traded backup quarterback Colt McCoy to the 49ers. The Browns sent McCoy and a sixth-round pick (173rd overall) in exchange for the 49ers' picks in the fifth (164th overall) and seventh rounds (227th overall). This trade seems to be a win-win for both the Browns and their former starter.

During his three seasons with the Browns, McCoy went 6-15 as a starter. This really should have come as no surprise. McCoy was projected to be a solid backup quarterback, but not a consistent starter. Additionally, with a weaker arm strength, he didn't have a chance of succeeding in Cleveland weather. The Browns really made a mistake using a third-round pick on him in the first place.

McCoy now gets a refreshing new start with the 49ers. He goes from one of the worst teams in the NFL to a Super Bowl contender. McCoy will compete against Scott Tolzien to be the backup to starter Colin Kaepernick. I expect that McCoy will win the job and will be ready in case of injury to Kaepernick.

This gives the Browns more financial flexibility at the quarterback position. This means that the Browns will likely give last season's starter Brandon Weeden every chance to earn the starting job again. He will likely get the majority of the first-team snaps during the team’s offseason.The Browns did bring in veteran Jason Campbell to compete with Weeden, so that is something to keep an eye on.

Baltimore Ravens (10-6) @ Denver Broncos (13-3) - Saturday, 4:30 PM EST, CBS

The Ravens head to Denver coming off an emotional win at home over the Indianapolis Colts defense. In Ray Lewis' final home game, the Ravens defense dominated Andrew Luck and the Colts offense. They kept the Colts out of the endzone and limited them to three field goals. Meanwhile, the Ravens offense did more than enough to keep up their end of the bargain. Joe Flacco came up with big pass plays when he was needed to. Ray Rice was his usual explosive self in the rushing and passing game. The Broncos already dominated the Ravens 34-17 in Baltimore less than a month ago. They will look to use a similar recipe for success in the rematch. The Broncos defense held the Ravens to three points through the first three quarters. Cornerback Chris Harris made the game-changing 98-yard interception return for a touchdown. Peyton Manning had an efficient game. Additionally, Knowshon Moreno and Jacob Hester both had rushing touchdowns. Rice was limited to 41 total yards in the Week 15 loss. The Broncos defense must shut him down once again.

Prediction: Broncos 31 Ravens 17

Green Bay Packers (11-5) @ San Francisco 49ers (11-4-1) - Saturday, 8:00 PM EST, FOX


The Packers did what they had to beat the Vikings in the wild card round. The defense limited Adrian Peterson's damage and kept Joe Webb under constant pressure. Linebacker Clay Matthews was the leader both on and off the field. He ended the game with four tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Aaron Rodgers quarterbacked the Packers offense like a machine. Fullback John Kuhn had a great game finding the end zone twice. These two teams met way back in Week 1 with the 49ers prevailing in Green Bay. However, these are very different teams now. One major difference for the 49ers is at quarterback. Colin Kaepernick took over as the team's starter in Week 11. With a 5-2 record down the stretch, he has played well and challenged defenses with a dual-threat attack. Frank Gore is still a strong runner, and the Packers can't afford to overlook him. The 49ers defense is one of the best in the league. They expect Pro Bowl defensive end Justin Smith to play, despite having a partially torn left triceps.

Prediction: 49ers 24 Packers 20

Seattle Seahawks (11-5) @ Atlanta Falcons (13-3) - Sunday, 1:00 PM EST, FOX

The top-seeded Falcons look to avoid a fifth consecutive playoff defeat while the Seahawks try to continue their postseason run with a seventh straight victory. The Seahawks defense looked vulnerable early, but turned up the intensity and took the game over in the second half. They did lose their sack leader Chris Clemons for the remainder of the playoffs due to a torn ACL. Russell Wilson has looked anything but a rookie quarterback. He has shown great smarts knowing when to pass and when to take off and pick up solid yardage on the ground. Pro Bowler Marshawn Lynch continues to be one of the most physical rushers in the league. The Falcons defense will need to be aware of the dynamic playmaking ability of both Wilson and Lynch and do their best to shut them down. Matt Ryan has earned the nickname "Matty Ice." However, that has yet to been the case in the playoffs. Ryan has a pair of very talented receivers to hook up with in Roddy White and Julio Jones. The game's most intriguing matchup is between White and Jones and the Seahawks big, physical cornerbacks, Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman. The victor of that battle may prove to be the winner of the game.

Prediction: Seahawks 31 Falcons 20

Houston Texans (12-4) @ New England Patriots (12-4) - Sunday, 4:30 PM EST, FOX

The Texans appeared to be in line for the conference's top seed before they blew that opportunity by losing three of their final four games that began with a 42-14 loss to the Patriots in Foxborough on December 10. The dismal end of the season forced the Texans to play in the wild card round of the playoffs. Now, they must travel back to Gillette Stadium for the rematch. In the Week 14 game, the Patriots got up 21-0 less than a minute into the second quarter. The Texans were never able to recover. One of the major reasons why is because they fell so far behind so early in the game. The Texans offense is at its best when they are able to establish the ground game with Arian Foster and Ben Tate first. That helps to open up the passing game for Matt Schaub to find Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels. Defensive Player of the Year candidate J.J. Watt led the NFL with 20 1/2 sacks, but he had no sacks and only two tackles in the first matchup against the Patriots. The Patriots offensive line protected Tom Brady well, giving him plenty of time to throw four touchdown passes. That was even without his favorite target, Rob Gronkowski. Gronkowski is now healthy and could be in for a big game against the Texans. The Patriots are winners of nine of their last ten and had an extra week to draw up a plan to try and beat the Texans once again.

Prediction: Patriots 38 Texans 20

NFL Wild Card Preview and Predictions

Cincinnati Bengals (10-6) @ Houston Texans (12-4) - Saturday, 4:30 PM EST, NBC

These two teams enter this wild card matchup with very different momentum. The Texans have lost three of their last four. During that stretch of time, quarterback Matt Schaub has thrown only one touchdown and three interceptions. In the same span, running back Arian Foster has only surpassed the 100-yard mark once. The Texans defense has continued to play well, but that has not been enough to make up the difference.

The Bengals have won seven of their last eight. Probably the biggest reason why is that their defense has played superbly. The last time the Bengals gave up more than 20 points was back in Week 9. The passing game has played well, but quarterback Andy Dalton continues to be inconsistent  Running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis has improved as the season has gone on. He rushed for over 100 yards in four games during the second half of the season.

Prediction: Texans 20 Bengals 17

Minnesota Vikings (10-6) @ Green Bay Packers (11-5) - Saturday, 8:00 PM EST, NBC

This is the third time this season and second time in less than a week that these NFC North rivals square off. This time it will be decided under the frigid conditions of Lambeau Field. The Vikings have relied on the resurgence of Adrian Peterson all season. His 2,097 rushing yards may have been just shy of the record, but were enough to carry his team to the playoffs. Quarterback Christian Ponder has been much maligned this season, but he did throw three touchdown passes in last week's win over the Packers. The Vikings defense has stepped up and played very well down the stretch against tough competition.

When many predicted before the season that the Packers would go to the Super Bowl, few thought their regular season would be as inconsistent as it was. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been the leader with continued dominant play, but the offensive line has struggled to protect him and to give him the time that he needs to operate. As a result, the run game has been virtually non-existent for much of the season. The Packers defense has had its ups and downs. They have been unable to shutdown Peterson, who has had a combined 409 yards in their previous two matchups this season. The Packers are not going to stop him, but if they can contain him, their odds of winning increase exponentially.

Prediction: Packers 28 Vikings 20

Indianapolis Colts (11-5) @ Baltimore Ravens (10-6) - Sunday, 1:00 PM EST, CBS

This game should be an emotional one for both sides. The Colts had their head coach Chuck Pagano return from leukemia treatment to the sidelines to lead them to a big win at home over the Texans last week as they head into the playoffs with considerable momentum. They finished the season winning five of their last six games as well. Rookie quarterback Andrew Luck has been a major difference maker for the Colts. During the regular season, he threw for 4,374 yards with 23 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Luck will need to limit his mistakes against a Ravens defense that always looks to force turnovers.

Ray Lewis is always the emotional leader of the Ravens, but the fact that he announced that this will be his final season will be an added motivation for his teammates. The Ravens began the season 9-2, but they dropped four of the last five games of the regular season to barely win the AFC North. Quarterback Joe Flacco had an up-and-down year, throwing for 3,817 yards, 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Getting running back Ray Rice involved in the passing and rushing game is crucial to the offense's success. The Ravens defense has not been nearly as strong this season. However, they are always a threat to create havoc and force turnovers.

Prediction: Ravens 31 Colts 27

Seattle Seahawks (11-5) @ Washington Redskins (10-6) - Sunday, 4:30 PM EST, FOX

This is a rare playoff game in that it features two rookie quarterbacks squaring off. This game could very well come down to which one of them plays better. The Seahawks come into the playoffs on a five-game winning streak. Their rookie quarterback, Russell Wilson, has played very well during the streak with a ratio of 13 total touchdowns to only two interceptions. During the same stretch of time, running back Marshawn Lynch has rushed for an average of 107.8 rushing yards a game and seven total touchdowns. The Seahawks defense has been one of the best in the league and has given up more than 24 points only once this season.

The Redskins started the season with a 3-6 record, but won seven games in a row to win the NFC East. Their reward is a home playoff game which could be significant because they have won four straight and five of six at FedEx Field, while the Seahawks were only 3-5 on the road this season. Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III has been the leader and inspiration for the Redskins as he has battled through injuries to play well. He has gotten huge help from his top running back, Alfred Morris. Morris ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns last week against the Dallas Cowboys. He finished the regular season with 1,613 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Prediction: Seahawks 20 Redskins 17

NFL Week 16 Preview and Predictions

5. Washington Redskins (8-6) @ Philadelphia Eagles (4-10) - 1:00 PM EST, FOX
The Redskins are in position to win the NFC East for the first time since 1999 and to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2007. They have won five straight games to move into a three-way tie for first, but they have the tiebreaker over the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants. Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III has the nation believing in and cheering for the Redskins. An optimistic outlook at the beginning of the season has turned into an absolutely dismal reality for the Philadelphia Eagles. Losers of nine of their last ten, little has gone their way. The Eagles have two more shots to get some revenge against a pair of divisional opponents the last two weeks of the season. They would be more than happy to knock one or both of them from the playoffs.

Prediction: Redskins 27 Eagles 16
 
4. New York Giants (8-6) @ Baltimore Ravens (9-5) - 4:25 PM EST, FOX
Last week, it was the Giants who were in position to win the NFC East. They had been there and done that and knew what they had to do. However, they were embarrassed 34-0 by the Atlanta Falcons. Now, they have to likely win out and get some help to return to the playoffs to defend their Super Bowl. Eli Manning has pitiful in the loss, passing for only 161 yards and two interceptions. On defense, the Giants weren't any better, giving up 394 total yards in the blowout loss. The Ravens are in a downward spiral as well. Losers of three straight, they are hoping simply to win the AFC North, which they have controlled all season. Quarterback Joe Flacco's six turnovers during the losing streak certainly isn't helping matters. This year's version of the Ravens' defense isn't as statistically strong either, especially at stopping the run.

Prediction: Giants 27 Ravens 24

3. Minnesota Vikings (8-6) @ Houston Texans (12-2) - 1:00 PM EST, FOX
The Vikings have won two straight and are in the playoffs heading into Week 16. However, that isn't what most of the talk around the team is about. Less than a year after suffering a torn ACL and MCL, Peterson is leading the NFL with a career-best 1,812 rushing yards on 289 carries. That means that he needs 294 yards in the last two games of the season to break Eric Dickerson's single-season record of 2,105, set in 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams. If Peterson has two big games and the defense plays well, the Vikings might just sneak into the playoffs under the radar. The Texans are on the verge of having home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. All they need is one more win, and they would love to take care of that this week. With a balance offense and strong defense, this is a team built for a run at the Super Bowl.

2. San Francisco 49ers (10-3-1) @ Seattle Seahawks (9-5) - 8:20 PM EST (Sunday), NBC
These two NFC West rivals should both make the playoffs, but there is plenty of pride and a first-round bye on the line in Sunday night's game. The 49ers have the second-best record in the NFC, but have yet to clinch the division due to their pesky divisional foes. They come into Sunday night's game following a huge win at New England, but they can't afford to let down their guard here. The Seahawks are primed for more success and have a perfect home record to protect. The solid play of rookie quarterback Russell Wilson and the rejuvenation of running back Marshawn Lynch's career has sparked the offense. The Seahawks defense is one of the most physical in the league. This should be a hard fought, low-scoring battle to the end.

1. Cincinnati Bengals (8-6) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (7-7) - 1:00 PM EST, CBS
As winners of five of their last six, the Bengals are on the verge of making the playoffs and keeping their archrival out at the same time. With a win over the Steelers, they would clinch their spot in the postseason. The trouble is that the Bengals have never had much success again the Steelers, especially in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are in an unusual spot. Losing four out of their last five game has them sitting outside of the playoffs looking in. Injuries have mounted up on both sides of the ball and poor decision making has cost them games. Despite the downfall, the Steelers are still in control of their own fate. A win against the Bengals on Sunday and next week at home against the Cleveland Browns would send the Steelers back to the playoffs. There is only one playoff spot left in the AFC and only the Bengals or the Steelers can be that team.

Prediction: Steelers 20 Bengals 17

5. New York Giants (7-4) @ Washington Redskins (5-6) - 8:30 PM EST (Monday), ESPN/WatchESPN

The Giants bounced back from back-to-back loss to destroy the Green Bay Packers 38-10. Eli Manning threw three touchdown passes, and the team had no turnovers. Those two things are crucial factors to the success of the Giants. The Redskins come in with momentum as well following their big Thanksgiving Day win over the Dallas Cowboys. Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III has thrown four touchdown passes in each of his last two games. His success through the air is crucial to the Redskins success.

Prediction: Redskins 27 Giants 24

4. Minnesota Vikings (6-5) @ Green Bay Packers (7-4) - 1:00 PM EST, FOX

Both teams come into this game on a negative note having been blown out in their game last week. Both offenses struggled to get anything going. The Vikings need the win here to remain in the playoff hunt. The Packers need the win to establish themselves once again as one of the NFC's top teams.

Prediction: Packers 24 Vikings 16

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-5) @ Denver Broncos (8-3) - 4:05 PM EST, FOX

Last week, the Buccaneers saw their four-game winning streak come in to an end in a hard fought 24-23 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Their opponent doesn't get much easier this week. The Broncos are one of the hottest teams in football as winners of six straight. Quarterback Peyton Manning is having another excellent season in his first year with his new team. Meanwhile, the Buccanners will need a much better showing out of running back Doug Martin if they hope to control the clock and pull off the upset.

Prediction: Broncos 31 Buccaneers 20

2. Seattle Seahawks (6-5) @ Chicago Bears (8-3) - 1:00 PM EST, FOX

The Seahawks have struggled to find ways to win on the road. They are going to have to come up with a way to just that if they hope to remain in the thick of the NFC playoff hunt. The Bears rebounded from two straight losses to crush the Vikings 28-10. They will look to get quarterback Jay Cutler and the rest of the offense healthy and back to top form on Sunday.

Prediction: Bears 20 Seahawks 17

1. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-5) @ Baltimore Ravens (9-2) - 4:25 PM EST, CBS

The Steelers have dropped two straight games with star quarterback Ben Roethisberger. They will still be without him when they face the Ravens again for the second time in three weeks. With question marks at quarterback, the Steelers will rely more on their stable of running backs, who are lead by newly named starter Jonathan Dwyer. The Ravens are winners of four in a row and have opened up a three-game lead in the AFC North. With the defense getting healthier, this team is trending up.

Prediction: Steelers 17 Ravens 13

5. New York Jets (3-5) @ Seattle Seahawks (5-4) - 4:05 PM EST, CBS

An embarrassing 30-9 loss at home to the Miami Dolphins concluded the Jets disappointing first half at 3-5. They had an entire bye week to think about it and will now try and bounce back with a strong second half to make a push for the playoffs. Their first game though is a tough road test across the country. The Seahawks have a 5-4 record, but are 4-0 at home. Rookie quarterback Russell Wilson continues to improve while running back Marshawn Lynch grinds out the bulk of the work. The Seahawks defense is physical and aggressive in how they play. The Jets will need consistency out of quarterback Mark Sanchez and a solid game on the ground by Shonn Greene in order to have a chance at the upset.

Prediction: Seahawks 27 Jets 17

4. Dallas Cowboys (3-5) @ Philadelphia Eagles (3-5) - 4:25 PM EST, FOX

These two NFC East rivals do not like each other at all, but they can relate to each other in at least one way this week. They both have a 3-5 record and have been playing some of their worst football this season as of late. Dallas has lost four out of their last five, while Philadelphia has lost four straight. The Cowboys offense has been a major area of struggle. In eight games, quarterback Tony Romo only has only 10 touchdown passes compared to 13 interceptions. The rushing attack of DeMarco Murray and Felix Jones has been almost nonexistent, due largely to injuries. Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has ten touchdown passes as well, but nine interceptions and six fumbles (three lost) are too many. Running back LeSean McCoy has been the definition of inconsistent with many very good games and equally many poor games.

Prediction: Eagles 24 Cowboys 20

3. New York Giants (6-3) @ Cincinnati Bengals (3-5) - 1:00 PM EST, FOX

The Giants saw their four game win streak come to an end in a hard fought loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Their offense is full of playmakers in quarterback Eli Manning, running backs Ahmad Bradshaw and Andre Brown and wide receivers Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks. The Giants defense has been what has struggled primarily this season. They have given up at least 23 points in each of their last three games. The Bengals have played poorly during their losing skid. Quarterback Andy Dalton has thrown at least one interception in every game so far this season. In their last three games, the Bengals defense has given up an average of 29.7 points per game. It is hard to win when those two things are the case.

Prediction: Giants 27 Bengals 20

2. Detroit Lions (4-4) @ Minnesota Vikings (5-4) - 1:00 PM EST, FOX

The Lions have used back-to-back wins to return to .500. Now, they look to get over that mark with a win over a divisional rival. Both teams are in the thick of the playoff hunt, but trail the division-leading Chicago Bears. The Lions offense got a boost last week from running back Mikel Leshoure's three touchdowns. If he and Joique Bell can help balance the Lions offense that would help take some of the pressure off quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Vikings come into this game as losers of three out of their last four. In those losses, their defense has given up an average of 34.7 points per game. Running back Adrian Peterson is doing everything he can to help his team win, but he needs everyone else to step up and do the same as well.

Prediction: Lions 27 Vikings 20

1. Atlanta Falcons (8-0) @ New Orleans Saints (3-5) - 1:00 PM EST, FOX

The Falcons have been consistent more than anything else. It isn't that all of their wins are blowouts or an unstoppable defense. They just play consistently good football. The main reason this starts with their quarterback Matt Ryan. He is nicknamed Matty Ice for a reason. His demeanor and play are steadily solid no matter the circumstance. It has rubbed off on his teammates as well. The Saints take on the character of their quarterback as well. Drew Brees is a fighter and can never be counted out in any situation. Despite an 0-4 start, Brees has rallied the troops to win three out of their last four. The Saints defense has struggled badly all season, but cornerback Patrick Robinson had a huge 99-yard pick-6  to help seal their win over the Philadelphia Eagles last week.

Prediction: Falcons 30 Saints 27

NFL Week 9 Preview and Predictions

5. Dallas Cowboys (3-4) @ Atlanta Falcons (7-0) - 8:20 PM EST (Sunday), NBC

With a loss to the New York Giants last week, the Cowboys know how important each game is to their playoff chances. They must do a much better job of focusing on limiting their mistakes if they hope to hand the Falcons their fist loss of the season. The Cowboys have been turnover prone throughout the season, while the Falcons have one of the best net differences in turnovers. Furthermore, Dallas has had twice the amount of penalties that Atlanta have had. With Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo continuing to struggle, he will continue to rely on tight end Jason Witten. Last week, Witten had 18 catches for 167 receiving yards. The Falcons continue to roll behind the confident and calm play over quarterback Matt Ryan.

Prediction: Cowboys 30 Falcons 24

4. Denver Broncos (4-3) @ Cincinnati Bengals (3-4) - 1:00 PM EST, CBS

The Broncos and Bengals come into this matchup going in opposite directions. The Broncos have won three out of four games to take the lead in the AFC West. Meanwhile, the Bengals have lost three straight to fall below .500 and into third place in the AFC North. In his last two games, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has thrown for over 300 yards and three touchdowns. The Broncos defense has played much better lately as well. In their last six quarters, they have allowed only 14 points. Much of the Bengals struggles can be linked to the play of quarterback Andy Dalton. He was able to throw for only 105 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. He has also struggled badly with turnovers, throwing at least one interception in every game so far this season.

3. Arizona Cardinals (4-4) @ Green Bay Packers (5-3) - 1:00 PM EST, FOX

The Cardinals were one of the big stories after starting the season 4-0, but have fallen back to reality after losing four in a row. One of the many problems has been keeping their top two quarterbacks, Kevin Kolb and John Skelton, healthy. The struggles of offensive line have left little running room for the backs and even less time for their quarterbacks to pass to their receivers. The Cardinals defense has actually played pretty well, but gets worn down as games continue. Meanwhile, the Packers are playing their best football of the season. Coming off of three straight wins, they have all of the momentum going their way. In those three games, quarterback Aaron Rodgers has thrown for a combined 11 touchdowns.

Prediction: Packers 30 Cardinals 10

2. Minnesota Vikings (5-3) @ Seattle Seahawks (4-4) - 4:05 PM EST, FOX

The Vikings have had a long week to think about their surprising loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night. The defense unit struggled badly in the loss, but has been pretty good this season on the whole. The Vikings offense has been balanced behind the solid play of young quarterback Christian Ponder, resurgent running back Adrian Peterson and explosive wide receiver Percy Harvin. They will look to be the latest NFC North team to beat the Seahawks, after the Lions beat them in the final minute last week. The Seahawks are in need of a win after two straight defeats have dropped them back to .500. They will continue to rely upon veteran running back Marshawn Lynch to take the pressure off of rookie quarterback Russell Wilson. The Seahawks defense has played well this season as well. They need their big secondary to step up in this matchup.

Prediction: Seahawks 24 Vikings 20

1. Pittsburgh Steelers (4-3) @ New York Giants (6-2)

Mother Nature might have one of the biggest affects on this game. As a result of Hurricane Sandy, the Steelers hotel in New Jersey still has no power. This means that the Steelers will have to fly to New York early Sunday morning, eat brunch at a hotel and then go straight to MetLife Stadium for the game. The Steelers come into the matchup off their most complete effort of the season. In their 27-12 win over the Washington Redskins, their quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw three touchdown passes and their defense kept Robert Griffin III and the Redskins offense from scoring a touchdown. The Giants are playing their best football of the season as well. Four straight wins have put them in control of the NFC East. With starting running back Ahmad Bradshaw questionable for the game, they will need quarterback Eli Manning to continue to play well in this tough matchup.

NFL Week 8 Preview and Predictions

5. Seattle Seahawks (4-3) @ Detroit Lions (2-4) - 1:00 PM EST, FOX

This is a crucial game for both teams in terms of the playoff hunt. The Seahawks will need to play better on the road. They have just a 1-3 road record and have turned the ball over at a higher rate. They will look to bounce back from a tough divisional loss to the San Francisco 49ers 13-6 last week. With the 49ers and Arizona Cardinals both in the NFC West playoff hunt, every win becomes important, especially conference ones. The Seahawks need to find an effective balance between rookie quarterback Russell Wilson and lead running back Marshawn Lynch.

The Lions really need to start winning football games if they hope to return to the playoffs. Of the 208 teams that have started 2-4, only 18 of them have made the playoffs. It begins with their offense. Quarterback Matthew Stafford has to be smart with the football. He will have to do without one of his top weapons. Wide receiver Nate Burleson is out for the year after suffering a leg fracture. This puts more of the pressure on top receiver Calvin Johnson. The Lions will also need wide receivers Titus Young and Ryan Broyles and tight end Tony Scheffler to step up their games to help fill the void.

Prediction: Seahawks 17 Lions 13

4. Miami Dolphins (3-3) @ New York Jets (3-4) - 1:00 PM EST, CBS

There is still some bad blood in this matchup stemming from their first meeting five weeks ago, which the Jets won on a field goal in overtime. That game was marred by injuries and brash words exchanged through the media. With the season reaching the midway point, both teams are in need of a win to remain in the playoff picture.

The Dolphins offense is centered upon the explosive capabilities of running back Reggie Bush. He is a game-changer, who makes defenses adjust to try and contain him. Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill is coming off one of the best games of his young career (21-of-29, 2 touchdowns) last week against the St. Louis Rams. He will  need to keep that success going the Jets.

The Jets will look to rebound from a tough loss to the New England Patriots last week in overtime. The loss put them below .500, a place they can't remain long if they hope to make the playoffs. Quarterback Matt Sanchez needs to continue to work on his accuracy and consistency. With Santonio Holmes out for the season with a Lisfranc foot injury, Jeremy Kerley has emerged as Sanchez's top target. The Jets will look to utilize his speed in both the passing and return game.

Prediction: Jets 20 Dolphins 17

3. Washington Redskins (3-4) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (3-3) - 1:00 PM EST, FOX

Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III played very well last week and had his team in a position to upset Eli Manning and the New York Giants. Griffin's targets vary week-to-week, but he has been adjusting well to meet the needs accordingly. Rookie running back Alfred Morris is coming off a strong game as well. He rush for 120 yards on just 22 carries. The team as a whole will have to play well to knock off the Steelers.

Speaking of the Steelers, they are coming off a much needed win over the Bengals on Sunday night in Cincinnati. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will need to continue to play well and to make wise decisions. The Steelers benefited last week from a young running backs. Jonathan Dwyer rushed for 122 yards on just 17 carries. Rookie Chris Rainey had a late touchdown run to help the Steelers gain the victory last week. The defense will need to continue to step up its play with important players missing due to injuries.

Prediction: Steelers 24 Redskins 23

2. New York Giants (5-2) @ Dallas Cowboys (3-3) - 4:25 PM EST, FOX

Anytime the Giants and Cowboys square off it seems like there is a lot on the line. While the Cowboys beat the Giants 24-17 in the season opener, the Giants have been the superior team ever since. The Giants will look to win their fourth game in a row behind the strong play of quarterback Eli Manning. The health of running back Ahmad Bradshaw could play a significant role on the outcome. He is currently listed as questionable for Sunday's game. On defense, the Giants have found that they will need other players to fill in for safety Kenny Phillips and defensive tackle Rocky Bernard, who have both been ruled out due to injury.

The Cowboys will look to find consistency. Quarterback Tony Romo has had ups-and-downs and will need to limit the turnovers against the Giants. Top wide receiver Dez Bryant was pretty much a non-factor in their win last week over the Carolina Panthers. The Cowboys will need him to step up and play a much stronger, especially since starting running back DeMarco Murray is out with a foot injury.

Prediction: Giants 27 Cowboys 24

1. Atlanta Falcons (6-0) @ Philadelphia Eagles (3-3) - 1:00 PM EST, FOX

Both the Falcons and Eagles come into this Sunday's matchup off a bye week. The Falcons worked on tweaking their problems, but those seem to be pretty minor when one considers that they are the last undefeated team in the NFL. Quarterback Matt Ryan has played very well, but needs to continue to work on limiting his turnovers. Wide receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White and tight end Tony Gonzalez will likely be some of Ryan's top targets.

The Eagles usually come out very strong following a bye week. Under Andy Reid, they are 13-0 in games immediately following a bye week, the longest such streak since the bye week was established in 1990. Coming in off of back-to-back losses, the Eagles will look to make that a reality once again. Quarterback Michael Vick's turnovers have been hurting this team, but this team must do all that it can to protect him from endangering situations. The Eagles defense will also try to find its feet following the firing of defensive coordinator Juan Castillo on October 16.

NFL Week 6 Preview and Predictions

5. Detroit Lions (1-3) @ Philadelphia Eagles (3-2) - 1:00 PM EST, FOX

Both of these teams have disappointed greatly so far this season. The Lions were expected to build upon last season's playoff berth. However, they are now 1-3 and haven't won since the opening week. The Lions are coming in off the bye week, so they hopefully have regrouped to go forward. They will need to keep their offensive attack balanced as well as possible.

The Eagles do have a winning record and are among the leaders in the NFC East, but those numbers can be very misleading. For example, their three wins have come been by a combined four points. If you have watched any of their games, that is because of their struggles, rather than clutch play. Quarterback Michael Vick must limit his mistakes and turnovers. He will be under continual pressure from the Lions defense.

Prediction: Eagles 20 Lions 17

4. Green Bay Packers (2-3) @ Houston Texans (5-0) - 8:20 PM EST, NBC

The Packers have had a surprisingly disappointing season thus far as well. Their offense hasn't been nearly as dominant as it has been the past few seasons. Their defense simply isn't talented enough to compensate for the difference that makes. The Packers could be throwing even more Sunday as a result of running back Cedric Benson being ruled out for the season.

The Texans have been dominant this season and have distinguished themselves as one of the best teams in the NFL. However, they are trying to recover from a loss of a player to injury. The Texans have found out that they will be without All-Pro linebacker Brian Cushing. They will need players such as defensive end J.J. Watt to step up and make a difference.

Prediction: Texans 27 Packers 24

3. New England Patriots (3-2) @ Seattle Seahawks (3-2)

The Patriots offense is beginning to click on all cylinders  One would expect the passing game to be rolling along with quarterback Tom Brady at the helm, but it has been the running game, led by the likes of Stevan Ridley, that has been just as good, if not better thus far this season. The Patriots defense has had its ups and downs. Their secondary and pass defense have continued to be struggle areas moving forward.

The Seahawks have been an intriguing team to follow this season. On offense, rookie quarterback Russell Wilson has benefited greatly from the strong rushing attack led by Marshawn Lynch. The Seahawks defense has been excellent this season. They're a force to be reckoned with. Their big secondary will look to pressure the Patriots targets early and often.

Prediction: Patriots 20 Seahawks 16

2. Denver Broncos (2-3) @ San Diego Chargers (3-2) - 8:30 PM EST (Monday), ESPN/WatchESPN

The Broncos have played well in all of the games this season. They just don't have all the wins to prove that. Offensively, the Broncos could benefit from being more aggressive on offense. The last two weeks, they have had to come-from-behind and lost as a result. The Broncos defense has played well, but have committed too many personal fouls and unnecessary actions. They must keep their emotions in check.

This is a big matchup with playoff implications for both teams. The winner will be in great shape to win the AFC West. The Chargers have looked good at times, but have played poorly as well. No aspect of their game really stands out. Offensively, quarterback Philip Rivers must limit his mistakes and turnovers to help his team win. Linebacker Shaun Philips is the man to keep an eye on defensively, as he will look to pressure Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning into creating errors.

Prediction: Broncos 27 Chargers 24

1. New York Giants (3-2) @ San Francisco 49ers (4-1) - 4:25 pm EST, FOX

This game is a rematch of last season's NFC Championship Game. The teams have changed some, but both continue to have the same tendencies. The Giants have started to pick up their game. Last week against the Cleveland Browns, their offense was on full throttle. Quarterback Eli Manning threw three touchdown passes, while running back Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for 200 yards and one score of his own.

The 49ers took little time to shake off the rust from a disappointing loss in Week 3 to the Minnesota Vikings.  In the two games since then, they have outscored their opponents by a combined 79-3. Running back Frank Gore has rushed the football well to lead the way. Defense continues to be a stronghold for the team. They are one of the most consistent and well-balanced units in the league.

Prediction: 49ers 24 Giants 20

NFL's Passivity is a Disgrace to the World of Sports

Normally, labor disputes in sports are between players and owners. The NFL took their disputes to a new level to involve referees this summer. Neither side would budge a bit, so the NFL decided to lock out the regular officials. This meant that the NFL would turn to "replacement referees" to begin this season. These new officials have a strange mixture of collegiate and other experience. The vast majority of them are underqualified to work NFL games, but NFL commissioner Roger Goodell tried to sweep that under the carpet.

Missed calls were pointed out during the first two weeks, but none were overly blatant. Goodell's luck ran out in Week 3 when both nationally-televised primetime games were marred by controversial endings involving officials.

Sunday Night Football featured the Baltimore Ravens hosting the New England Patriots. The Patriots led 30-28 going into the two-minute warning of the fourth quarter. They had just punted the ball to Baltimore. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco drove his team to the Patriots 34-yard line. On third-and-nine, Flacco threw deep down the right sideline to Jacoby Jones. The sideline official flagged Patriots cornerback Devin McCourty for defensive pass interference. The call was a bit questionable but could have gone either way in my opinion.

This set up the Ravens with a first down inside the ten. They let the clock wind down to set up a 27-yard field goal attempt for kicker Justin Tucker. The Patriots tried to ice the rookie with a timeout. Tucker's kick was very close to the upright, but the referees both ruled it good, giving the Ravens the 31-30 win.

Video review showed that the officials clearly made the correct call. That didn't stop Patriots head coach Bill Belichick from angrily chasing down one of the referees and initiating physical contact with him. In the press conference after the game, Belichick showed no real remorse. The NFL has leveled no disciplinary action against the coach. What is to prevent this from continuing to happen?

This brings us to the even bigger controversy at the conclusion of Monday Night Football. I will fast forward to the very last play of the game. The Green Bay Packers led the Seattle Seahawks 12-7. With time for one last play, the Seahawks had the ball on the Packers 24-yard line. Quarterback Russell Wilson threw a Hail Mary to the endzone towards wide receiver Golden Tate. Tate clearly shoved Packers cornerback Sam Shields out of the way. The ball was caught by Packers M.D. Jennings, but Tate came in and tried to rip the ball away.

The replacement referees called it a touchdown. They did review the play and the ruling stood, giving the Seahawks the win. The problem is that this clearly contrasts the NFL rule book. Today, the NFL admitted the missed call, but called it unreviewable. Goodell does have the power vested in his position to overrule the standing. However, he has been silent as can be about the controversy.

There are so many to be blame for this disgraceful situation. The NFL continues to allow unqualified personnel to play crucial roles in the outcomes of their weekly games. This is ironic because the league is trying to do so much to improve safety and protection of their players. The poor officiating is allowing for more dangerous playing and increased emotions and tempers as a result. Players are finding ways to get around what officiating is being done by the replacement referees.

Let me take a break and give the replacement referees a break. There probably haven't been any officials in the history of sports that have been so microscopically judged and critiqued as these ones are. I believe they are in over the heads. They aren't used to the pace of the game and the rules that are in place. That being said, it is inexcusable for them to be making calls based on rules they do not know or comprehend.

Back to those who are to blame, the regular referees cannot be cut any slack here. They are as stubborn and as much to blame as the owners. It is easy to say the owners are greedy, but so are the officials here. They already make $150,000 a year for the games they officiate. Do they really need to protest their lack of a pension and fringe benefits?

I mean really. Can we just have someone step up and be a man for once? Goodell doesn't want to look like he made a mistake. The owners and regular referees are too stubborn and greedy. The replacement referees are getting blamed when they aren't even the root of the problem.

I wish someone would have the guts to do the right thing. Before it is too late. Before someone gets seriously hurt. Before the integrity of the league is slandered any more. Someone needs to do the right thing for the sake of the players, their fans, and the beloved sport we call American football. Just do whatever it takes to get football back to the way it is supposed to be played.

NFL Week 3 Preview and Predictions

5. Philadelphia Eagles (2-0) @ Arizona Cardinals (2-0) - 4:05 PM EST, FOX

When Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb was benched before the season began in favor of John Skelton, it seemed unlikely that Kolb would get the opportunity to play his for team, the Eagles, when they came to town in Week 3. However, injuries to Skelton have made Kolb the starter once again. What seemed even less likely is that the Cardinals would be undefeated coming into Sunday's game. But after wins over the Seahawks and Patriots, that is exactly how the Cardinals come into the third week of the NFL season.

The Eagles are 2-0 as well, even if it is by the narrowest of margins. Their two wins so far this season have been by one point each. The Eagles must be more careful with the football. In the past fifty years, only four teams have turned the ball over at least four times in their first two games and won both games. The Eagles must do much better in that regard if they hope to keep winning football games. The Cardinals need big games out of their running backs Beanie Well and Ryan Williams to have a shot at pulling another upset. A balanced attack will help keep the Eagles defense on their heels.

4. Green Bay Packers (1-1) @ Seattle Seahawks (1-1) - 8:30 PM EST (Monday), ESPN/WatchESPN

The Packers rebounded from a Week 1 defeat at the San Francisco 49ers with a solid win over their divisional rival Chicago Bears. They used some trickery and improved play from their defense to help earn their first victory of the season. The Packers offense still isn't putting up big winners, but no one doubts they are one of the best in the league regardless. The Seahawks had one of the best preseasons of any team in the NFL. While their Week 1 letdown against the Cardinals was a bit surprising, they rebounded solidly with a 27-7 thumping of the Dallas Cowboys.

The Seahawks offense is centered upon running back Marshawn Lynch. He sets up ball control and keys their possession-based offense. Lynch takes the pressure off rookie quarterback Russell Wilson by helping set up his play-action pass. The Seahawks defense is talented, but will have their handful the Packers offense. The key matchup will be the Packers receivers against the Seahawks secondary. The Seahawks big cornerbacks will look to disrupt the Packers timing from the very snap of the football.

Prediction: Packers 24 Seahawks 17

3. Atlanta Falcons (2-0) @ San Diego Chargers (2-0) - 4:05 PM EST, FOX

The Falcons already have two wins against AFC West opponents this season. They will look to get their third Sunday as they travel to San Diego to take on the Chargers. The Falcons survived a trip to Arrowhead Stadium in Week 1 and defeated Peyton Manning and the Broncos in the national spotlight in Week 2. The Chargers are undefeated through the first two weeks of the season as well, after beating their divisional rival Oakland Raiders in Week 1 and throttling the Tennessee Titans in Week 2.

The big matchup in this game is the battle of the quarterbacks. Matt Ryan has been superb so far this season for the Falcons. His composure and calm demeanor under pressure has earned him the nickname of "Matty Ice." The aspect of the Falcons offense that has struggled has been their rushing attack. Tailback Michael Turner appears to have lost a step, but will look to rebound against the Chargers. Quarterback Philip Rivers' strong play has led the Chargers offense to success. Their quick, short yardage passing game has been the prominent feature that has brought about success.

Prediction: Falcons 27 Chargers 21

2. New England Patriots (1-1) @ Baltimore Ravens (1-1) - 8:20 PM EST (Sunday), NBC

The importance of having a great kicker might be overlooked around the league, but these two teams can speak to its significance. In last year's AFC championship game, the Ravens' Billy Cundiff had a 32-yard chip shot to send the game to overtime. He choked and the Ravens season was consequentially over. Last week, the Patriots had a chance to avoid an embarrassing upset to the Cardinals. Kicker Stephen Gostkowski had a 42-yard attempt to win the game for the Patriots. However, he shanked the kick badly, giving the Cardinals the upset victory.

Both teams are very good and rarely lose two in a row, so we should expect a battle in this one. The Patriots will need quarterback Tom Brady to lead the way. One of the strongest parts of his game is his ability to read defenses and pick them apart at any level. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has been good, but his inconsistent play makes him difficult to rely on. That is why the Ravens offense centers upon running back Ray Rice. He is one of the most versatile playmakers in the league and capable of breaking one at any given time. One last thing to note is that the Ravens are tough to beat at home with a record of 15-1 over the past two seasons.

Prediction: Ravens 28 Patriots 27

1. Houston Texans (2-0) @ Denver Broncos (1-1) - 4:25 PM EST, CBS

The Texans have dismantled their first two opponents of the season by a margin of 57-17. Quarterback Matt Schaub has played well and their running game has been able to help eat up the clock in the second half. The Texans defense has been suffocating in both games. They lead the league in total defense (196.0 yards per game) and scoring defense (8.5 points per game). After a big win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1, the Broncos suffered a bit of a letdown in their Week 2 loss to the Falcons. Quarterback Peyton Manning played nearly perfect in his first game with the Broncos, but was unable to overcome a couple of early mistakes in the second one.

Both teams will need a balanced attack to find success against a pair of talented defenses. Schaub will need continued solid play out of running back Arian Foster and the Texans rushing attack. The Broncos will need running back Willis McGahee to play well to help take pressure off Manning. Turnovers could be crucial in separating these sides. The Texans have forced five and have yet to give one up one themselves so far this season.

NFL Week 2 Preview and Predictions

5. Dallas Cowboys (1-0) @ Seattle Seahawks (0-1) - 4:05 PM EST, FOX

These two teams have very different state of minds coming off Week 1. Not many gave the Cowboys a chance in the NFL season kickoff against the New York Giants. However, the Cowboys were definitely the better team in that matchup. They would like to build off that success at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. Expectations were growing for the Seahawks as a result of a strong preseason. Unfortunately, they struggled with consistency in a loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The Seahawks would like to put Week 1 behind them.

The Cowboys aired out quite a bit last week. Quarterback Tony Romo has a big play receiving corps that was surprisingly led by Kevin Ogletree, who caught eight passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Dez Bryant is another Cowboys wideout who is dangerous. The Seahawks will try and counteract the Cowboys passing game with their large secondary. They will try to use physical play at the line to disrupt the timing of the offense. The Seahawks need to establish the running game with Marshawn Lynch. This will help take the pressure off rookie quarterback Russell Wilson.

Prediction: Seahawks 23 Cowboys 20

4. Baltimore Ravens (1-0) @ Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) - 1:00 PM EST, CBS

While both these teams are 1-0, their wins over AFC North opponents came in very different ways. The Ravens obliterated the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football. Conversely, the Eagles struggled and had to come from behind to defeat the Cleveland Browns. What these two teams have in common is an offense centered on a dynamic, versatile running back.

The Eagles need LeSean McCoy to use his power and speed to help take pressure off quarterback Michael Vick. Vick had one of his worst games of his career throwing four interceptions. The Ravens offense is best when running back Ray Rice shines brightest. Last season, he led the team in rushing and receptions. Rice's value simply cannot be overlooked. As opposed to Vick, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco is coming off one of the best games of his career.

Prediction: Ravens 31 Eagles 20

3. New York Jets (1-0) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1) - 4:25 PM EST, CBS

In their Week 1 win, the Jets finally gave quarterback Mark Sanchez time to operate. His execution was excellent partially as a result. This all was rather surprising because the Jets offensive line struggled so badly during the regular season. The Steelers will undoubtedly look to test them again with their mixed blitzing packages. They played fairly well in Week 1, but simply couldn't overcome the superb play of Payton Manning.

The Steelers should benefit defensively from the debut of safety Ryan Clark. He will help stabilize pass protection and free up Troy Polamalu to play his style of football. Offensively, the Steelers might look to utilize quarterback Ben Roethlisberger more on first and second down. The Jets have a talented secondary to match up, but they should have their hands full in this one.

2. Detroit Lions (1-0) @ San Francisco 49ers (1-0) - 8:20 PM EST (Sunday), NBC

The Lions are just happy that they got the win in Week 1 after an unimpressive showing against the St. Louis Rams. Meanwhile, the 49ers came into Lambeau Field and dominated the Packers. The 49ers defense shut down Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense. They will need to be just as good with Matthew Stafford and the Lions explosive offense coming to town.

The Lions offensive line is going to need to protect Stafford from the intimidating 49ers defense. When faced with pressure, Stafford becomes more likely to make mistakes and turn the ball over. While it hasn't been widely discussed, the 49ers offense got much better this offseason. The focal point is still Frank Gore, one of the best running backs in the league. They added wide receivers Mario Manningham and Randy Moss to give quarterback Alex Smith reliable targets.

Prediction: 49ers 31 Lions 20

Last week, veteran quarterback Peyton Manning made his much anticipated return to football in his debut with the Broncos. He looked like he never left as he picked apart the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. The Falcons had an excellent first game as well as they came into Arrowhead Stadium and stomped the Kansas City Chiefs. They put up an impressive 40 points in one of the most hostile environments in the league.

It was a familiar sight to see Manning running his no-huddle, call his own play offense last week. What many people don't realize is that Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan likes to do the same thing. A crucial aspect of the Falcons chance of winning is the play of their offensive line. They must protect Ryan from the Broncos' Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil and open up running lanes for backs Michael Turner and Jacquizz Rodgers.

Rookie Russell Wilson Named Seahawks Starting Quarterback

The Seattle Seahawks were excited when they were able to get former Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. They thought they got great value considering where the pick was made. Despite leading the Badgers to the Rose Bowl in his senior year, Wilson's draft stock fell because he was thought as too undersized to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. When the Seahawks went out and signed free agent quarterback Matt Flynn, it appeared that Wilson would be forced to battle out the backup job with incumbent Tavaris Jackson. However, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll made it clear that all three quarterbacks would get an equal shot at the starting job.

As training camp got underway, Wilson was able to pick up the Seahawks offensive playbook more quickly than expected. He clearly benefited from playing in a West Coast offensive system in college. Wilson spent his first three years at North Carolina State before transferring for his senior year to Wisconsin. In his final year, he was named first-team, all-Big Ten quarterback.

Wilson's maturity was evident to the Seahawks coaching staff right away. Carroll told reporters, "He is so prepared. He doesn't seem like a first-year player. He seems like he's been around. He gets it, he understands, and he is a tremendous leader in that way. He doesn't do anything but the right thing in all of his work and his preparation and his competitiveness has been demonstrated again."

Flynn got the starts in the first two weeks of the preseason against the Tennessee Titans and Denver Broncos. He had his share of ups and downs in both games. Wilson came in during the second half of both games. He played quite well, but he was playing against backups in that stage of the game. Wilson's real test came when he was given the start last Friday night at the Kansas City Chiefs. All he did was complete 13 of 19 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson's quarterback rating on the night was an impressive 134.8. He also rushed for 58 yards as well. Flynn did not play against the Chiefs due to a sore elbow.

When one looks at Wilson's preseason numbers as a whole, one cannot help but be impressed by his performances. He went 35 of 52 (63.7%) for 464 yards and five touchdowns. Wilson's 119.4 quarterback rating led the league among eligible qualifiers. His only blatant mistake of the preseason was an interception in the end zone against the Titans. Other than that, Wilson had an impressive preseason from start to finish.

Therefore, it came as no surprise that Carroll named Wilson the Seahawks starting quarterback for the season opener at the Arizona Cardinals on September 9. Flynn will surely be disappointed to be relegated to yet another backup role, but he did not earn the starting job, and his injury certainly didn't help the situation in any way. The Seahawks traded Jackson to the Buffalo Bills for an undisclosed draft pick. I am excited to see how Russell Wilson does as the Seahawks starter this season. You can't help but root for a guy that almost everyone seemed to say couldn't make it as a starter in the NFL.
